Quick answer

Do I need to register a residential alarm in Allentown?

It depends on the alarm. The city code requires owners or tenants to provide information about audible building alarms. For automatic protection devices connected through an alarm supplier, the supplier must provide installation information. The code does not clearly describe one general homeowner permit for every residential system.

At a glance

Essentials

Audible alarms

Owners or tenants must provide installation and contact information.

Automatic devices

Alarm suppliers provide lists for devices connected through assigned lines.

2Two false alarms

The service-fee provision begins after two false alarms within 30 days.

The amount is not stated in the reviewed code chapter.

What the code requires

Information provided to the city

For an audible building alarm, the owner or tenant provides the name and phone number of the owner or tenant, the alarm address and phone number, and contact information for at least two people who can respond and enter the property.

For an automatic protection device connected through an alarm supplier, the supplier provides similar location and responder information to the Emergency Communications Center.

Response policy

False alarms

When more than two false alarms come from one building alarm within 30 days, the code allows a city service fee for the third and each additional false alarm. The current dollar amount is established separately and is not stated in Chapter 154.

Coverage note

Fire-alarm information

!

The chapter defines alarm systems broadly enough to include fire and intrusion signals. It does not explain separate residential fire-alarm installation or inspection requirements.

What the official sources tell us

Chapter 154 covers audible alarms and automatic protection devices intended to summon police or firefighters. It assigns different reporting responsibilities to alarm users and alarm equipment suppliers, so it should not be summarized as one universal residential permit rule.

How we handle uncertainty: If an official source does not say something clearly, we label it “not specified” rather than assume.
